Throughout the journey, players gather eight Gym Badges and explore the region to go to the final Championship battles and earn the title of the new Champion/Pokémon Master. All players start off by picking one of 3 starters, which will be of the Fire-type, Water-type, and Grass-type (with two exceptions), and it joins the player on their journey and evolve as they are leveled up, through battling and relationship. These regions go from Kanto in Red/Blue/Green to Galar in Sword/Shield. The main Pokémon games are where you are in one of the many regions. Spin-off games give players various options in the way they both obtain and make use of Pokémon. In most games, the player can choose one out of the three starter Pokémon to start their journey with.

The defining point of where new generations begin is when a new standard style Pokémon game with a set of new Pokémon added to the Pokédex is released.
